Smith to President: Whose Side Are You On?

Washington, D.C. – The Justice Department today asked an appeals court to block the enforcement of Alabama’s immigration law.  House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) issued the statement below criticizing the administration’s decision.

Chairman Smith: “Once again the Obama administration is trying to prevent immigration laws from being enforced.  They continue to put illegal immigrants ahead of the interests of American taxpayers and unemployed Americans who need the jobs held by illegal workers.

“With our national debt and unemployment rate at record highs, we could save billions of taxpayer dollars and open up millions of jobs for unemployed Americans by simply enforcing immigration laws.  But Administration officials refuse to enforce all of our immigration laws.

“The President’s on the wrong side of the American people.  According to a recent poll, two-thirds of the American people want to see immigration laws enforced.  And while 14 million Americans are unemployed, seven million illegal immigrants work in the U.S.  Mr. President, whose side are you on?”
