Get ready for Operation Castaway.

Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight committee, appeared on Fox News last Thursday to discuss his investigation of the “Gun Walker” scandal.  Notably, he seems a bit protective of Acting ATF Director Ken Melson, as he describes what Melson was “told,” and how ATF was “kept in the dark” on Gun Walker strategy.









Also, the Congressman discusses the involvement of agencies beyond the ATF, which employed many of the ostensible “targets” of Operation Fast and Furious as paid informants. Issa mentions the astonishing fact that in only two instances was there any real effort made to track Gun Walker weapons… and in one case, the ATF did nothing but watch the guns “walk” deep into Mexico, until “the signal simply disappeared.”

Issa thinks culpability reaches far beyond Melson, to “the highest levels of Justice,” and specifically names Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer. Another House Republican, Rep. Allen West of Florida, has his sights a little higher than that, as he calls for the removal of Breuer’s boss, Attorney General Eric Holder.



How bad is Gun Walker getting for the Obama Administration? Courtesy of the Daily Caller, here’s Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume, saying “this Obama Justice Department reminds me of nothing so much as the Nixon Justice Department.”



Whatever its flaws, the Nixon Justice Department didn’t get ICE and U.S. Border Patrol agents killed. The stench Hume talked about is going to get worse. How much worse? How about another Gun Walker operation… this one to Honduras?

David Codrea of the Gun Rights Examiner dishes up some information from “a proven credible source” about Operation Castaway, run from the Tampa office of the ATF by Special Agent in Charge Virginia O’Brien:

SAC O’Brien was previously the Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Division, was later promoted to the Deputy Assistant Director of ATF, but then stepped down to the position in Tampa. Whether the allegations of our source refer to the ongoing Operation Castaway remains at this hour unclear, but our source is certain that O'Brien has allowed the "walking" of straw-purchased firearms to Honduras using the same failed strategy as the Phoenix Field Division's Operation Fast and Furious. That Operation Castaway involved arms smuggling to Honduras is also certain.

Codrea says that Issa and his Senate partner, Charles Grassley of the Judiciary Committee, have been made aware of Operation Castaway. I’m sure they’ll discuss it with Ken Melson at their next opportunity. I understand he’s been doing a lot of talking lately.
